The Planes of Tonga (well sort of)

Unitil early 2004, Royal Tongan Airlines was the National Airline of Tonga. As of June 2004 the assets of the airline were being liquidated.

They had several turboprop planes, a Boeing 757 and code-sharing arrangements with Air New Zealand, Air Pacific and Polynesian Airlines. Several years ago they had a Boeing 737 in their fleet, but the Supersonic jet aircraft pictured below was just a figment of someone's vivid imagination (and Photoshop skills)

On June 9, 2004 Peau Vava'u began service between Tongatapu and Vava'u with a 28-seat DC3 from New Zealand's Pion Air. Service to Ha'apai began on June 10, 2004.They hope to bring in a 9-seater aircraft to provide service to 'Eua and the Niuas.

Flyniu Airlines did begin providing service between Nukualofa, Vava'u and Ha'apai in mid-2004 with a Dash-8 that they were leasing from Air New Zealand. Shortly thereafter the Tonagn government decided that there would only one carrier licensed to fly domestically in Tonga. The sole license was awarded to Peau Vava'u. Flyniu won an injunction to allow them to keep flying, but the injunction was vacated in September 2004. As a result Flyniu had to stop flying.
