An Al Story™

Why is Al Famous in Tanzania?

This is a story about Tanzania, even though I have never set foot in Tanzania. In fact the closest I ever got to Tanzania on this trip was about 3500 miles away.

This is really a story about getting out of Thailand. I had just spent several wonderful days relaxing on the beautiful sands of the island of Phuket. But that's another story for another day. (But if you ever get a chance to go to Phuket, don't hesitate for a second. Just go!)

My plan was to take the daily United flight out of Bangkok to Taiwan, where I'd connect with another United flight heading to Honolulu, Hawaii. Sounded like a good plan. And the opportunity to go from the beaches of Phuket to the beaches of Hawaii is not to be missed. Can you tell I like Islands? (By the way if you like Island life, check out Islands Magazine. Every month it'll sate some of your pent-up island fever.)

My flight was due to leave at 9AM, so at 6:30 I hopped in one of the Mercedes' at the Grand Hyatt Erawan for the commute to Don Muang International Airport. If you want to see empty roads in Bangkok (definitely a rare event), 6:30 AM is a good choice. My driver decided to celebrate the lack of traffic by accelerating to 100 MPH (160 kmph)

Needless to say I got to the airport in record time, joined the Check-in lines at United, got checked in, paid my departure tax, navigated the queue at Passport Control, didn't beep as I went through the metal detectors at Security and headed to my gate. All this, pretty hassle-free in about an hour.
